2 June 2021

Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and pre leukemia in Malta will be the basis of a new research study carried out in a historic first by The Maltese Association of Biomedical Scientists (MABS), The National Alliance for Rare Diseases Support Malta and The Marigold Foundation. The project shall foster the knowledge garnered through diagnostic testing, research and the support of its members to further embark on a project of excellence to develop new methods and reveal the underlying mechanisms of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in Malta.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking, University of Malta, President of the MABS, Professor Joseph Borg said that such research projects carried out by local biomedical scientists aim to have an impact on the local population preventing patients from reaching a more advanced and difficult stage in their disease. Prof Joseph Borg lauded the work of The National Alliance for Rare Diseases and said that without the support of such NGOs and the financial support of The Marigold Foundation such important research would not be possible.
